CynergisTek’s President and Chief Strategy Officer Mac McMillan will be participating in a CIO Roundtable hosted by NCHICA on July 11th and 12th.
Best Practices in Biomedical Device Security
Biomedical devices have been recognized as a security threat to the healthcare industry for over a decade yet the regulatory guidance and practice of securing devices is severely lagging. Consequently, the immature security posture for these devices created unwanted attention, e.g., reports of successful WannaCry infections. In other instances, the FDA recently threatened legal action such as cease and desist and civil monetary fines to major biomedical manufacturers. This session will focus on the current threats and challenges biomedical devices pose to security programs and how to develop a security strategy to address biomedical devices and the Internet of Things (IoT). It will review current regulatory guidance and best practices, including the recommendations in the June 2017 Cybersecurity Task Force Report on Improving Cybersecurity in the Healthcare Industry, along with practical tips that CIOs can implement at their organization such as improved asset management, patch management, configuration control and governance structures.
